FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT

For the purposes of applying the National Planning Policy Framework, “flood risk” is a combination of the probability and the potential consequences of flooding from all sources; we provide specialist advice on all matters relating to flood risk.

  • Flood Risk Assessment (FRA)

    In England, FRA are required as part of a planning application for development sites within Environment Agency Flood Zones 2 & 3 and development sites greater than 1 hectare. Betts Hydro prepare site specific FRA in accordance with the Technical Guidance for the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and in full consultation with the relevant statutory bodies.

    We have provided FRA for Residential, Commercial, Retail, Leisure, Infrastructure and Industrial developments; with sites ranging from straightforward to highly complex, we also have the expertise to carry out hydraulic flood modelling which is often requested by the Environment Agency (EA) or used to maximise the development potential of sites.

  • Flood Consequence Assessment (FCA)

    In Wales, FCA are required for development sites located within Flood Zones B & C on the Welsh Government Development Advice Map. Betts Hydro prepare site specific FCA in accordance with Technical Advice Note 15 (TAN15) and in full consultation with the relevant statutory bodies.

    We have provided FCA for Residential, Commercial, Retail, Leisure, Infrastructure and Industrial developments; with sites ranging from straightforward to highly complex, we also have the expertise to carry out hydraulic flood modelling which is often requested by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) or used to maximise the development potential of sites.

  • Hydraulic Modelling

    Hydrodynamic modelling can provide clarification as to the extent of floodplain and flood risk to an existing or proposed development, by providing a greater degree of accuracy than existing Environment Agency Maps due to more detailed levels information. Betts Hydro are experienced in producing 1D hydrodynamic models of watercourses and identifying the extents of floodplains.

    We use a range of different specialist software packages to achieve this including HEC-RAS and Microdrainage; these models enable us to predict a range of statistics including; flood depths, velocities, inundation rates and flood hazard ratings. This can allow our clients to maximise the development potential of sites whilst safeguarding existing and proposed development from flood risk.

  • Breach Analysis

    Betts Hydro can provide overtopping or breach analysis of defences, including coastal, to provide hazard mapping which is often required by the EA/NRW to investigate the potential flood risk posed by breaches of natural and man-made flood defences.
