Description:

The project required refurbishment of an 85 m x 50 m wide steel frame structure. The original steel frame building dates back to mid-1950’s, and was used as a workshop for Diesel Engines. The building included engine pits, two 2.5 tonne overhead cranes, an Atlas Wheel lathe, and ancillary office buildings.

Due to lack of maintenance the building had fallen into disrepair, and initially Betts Associates were engaged to provide a structural appraisal of the building, with a view to independent purchase of the structure.

Existing overhead cranes were to be replaced with double lifting capacity, and two offset cranes running on crane rails.

This entailed strengthening existing crane run-way beams, and providing new support columns and foundations.

Part of the refurbished building will be used to store high value steam trains and coaches. The client required an overhead viewing gallery / walkway.

The walkway design was modelled using in-house software and presentation drawings created using AutoDesk Revit
